What are the conventions of music videos?

  • Length is usually 3-4 minutes
  • Visuals reflect the lyrics; sometimes videos are abstract/conceptual 
  • Focus on artist as "Star" e.g low angle = high status
  • repeated close up
  • aspirational costumes depending on genre; themed costumes 
  • "Authorage" - The Stars distinctive visual style 
  • Fast cutting rate and loads of shots
  • cutting rhythm in sync with the beat and lyric
  • Lipsync - role of performance
  • Dancing and playing instruments depending on genre
  • Studio setting

  • Cutting rate varies; slow start speeds up at end
